Rodney Rice Should be Tennessee's Next Portal Target

Rodney Rice Should be Tennessee's Next Portal Target

By Pablo Cong

If Tennessee keeps adding talent like they just landed from the portal, there’s no reason the Vols shouldn’t be considered a serious Final Four contender next season. The latest pickup—former Maryland point guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie—adds experience, shot-making, athleticism, and two-way toughness to a roster that desperately needs to reload after losing a star-studded backcourt.

But it’s not just Gillespie’s on-court game that should excite Tennessee fans—it’s the ripple effect of his presence. He’s already taken an active role in recruiting, and one name he’s reportedly targeting is former Maryland guard Rodney Rice. A dynamic scorer, Rice averaged nearly 14 points per game for the Terps last season and has flashed the potential to be a high-level offensive weapon. He’d be stepping into the shoes of former Vols standout Chaz Lanier, whose 17 points per game will be tough to replace.

The idea of pairing Gillespie with a familiar face like Rice is intriguing—their synergy could be the catalyst that propels Tennessee deep into March. Both guards are willing and capable defenders, aligning perfectly with the Vols’ trademark physicality and disciplined execution under Rick Barnes. But what sets this duo apart is their ability to create offense—something Tennessee has often lacked in critical postseason moments. These additions could be the missing pieces to a Final Four puzzle.

If Rice does follow Gillespie to Knoxville, Tennessee, it won’t just be a threat in the SEC—they’ll be a national title contender. The portal has changed the game, and the Vols are proving they know how to play it.
