Top Transfer Ja'Kobi Gillespie Commits to Tennessee

By Pablo Cong

Rick Barnes and the Vols received good news on Friday. Ja'Kobi Gillespie, an explosive and versatile guard, is transferring to Tennessee from Maryland, giving the Volunteers a valuable reinforcement in the backcourt.  Gillespie is considered one of the top players in the transfer portal.  He averaged 14.7 points and 4.8 assists this season, leading the Terrapins to an appearance in the Sweet 16.  Originally out of Greeneville High in Tennessee, Gillespie played his first two college seasons at Belmont.  He’ll have just one year left to play in Knoxville.

His arrival is pivotal as Tennessee looks to replace former All-American guard Zakai Zeigler, a key playmaker and defensive anchor. With Zeigler’s departure, the Volunteers sought a guard capable of bringing defensive tenacity, orchestrating the offense, and generating scoring opportunities—strengths that Gillespie brings to the table. His presence helps ensure that Tennessee continues its tradition of elite guard play under head coach Rick Barnes.

Tennessee's roster is still in flux.  With Gillespie's addition, Rick Barnes currently has nine players projected for the 2025-26 roster.  But there could be outgoing transfers yet.  It'll be a busy time coming up. This was a huge pickup for the volunteer nation, expect more to come soon!
